Black and White- Method, Material or Meaning

In the past 120 days I have been thinking about the theme Black and White, it was posed for a show call due September 21st 2010.

I have never looked at my work first from the color perspective, but in this case color is where I started. Now at first I thought the subject to be very simplistic, straight forward color. Thinking to myself this will not take much time, I’ll stick a piece in my schedule of deadlines and have plenty of time to spare. But in my drawings black and white posed so much drama and resistance. I was motivated into stimulation of no sleep, sending me into the research and collection mode. I began to read everything I could on the subject. Then I found myself asking others what they thought about Black and White. By the way, this is an excellent conversation starter at openings and parties. The thoughts lead to more drawings which lead to more dimension of the subject. Reading, thoughts, perspective, balance, change, emotion, then symbolism, peoples, places, events and more drawings. I goat extremely entangled in the opportunities of what this simple idea had turned away from being.

Now I am in the last hours of deadline, cramming to finishing 4 sculptures with still no sleep. I have developed many things including a labor some finish for metal and a new respect for the simple colors Black and White. I hope my work will reflect the depths of thought to material, method and meaning this opportunity has offered one artist. I intend to send you the onlooker on a Black and White journey that is not so simple.

My ending task is to choose only 2 pieces of the four, to present for possible inclusion in the show Black and White.

Stay tuned for the pictures I haven’t shot yet. I still have paint touch up and 2 days to go!

Special Thanks to the Photographer Jim McLaughlin

Special Thanks to Photographer

Jim McLaughlin did an outstanding job with the difficult task of photographing the new sculpture pieces. The pieces are bursting with color, capturing light and spirit with polished Gemstones of Agate and Crystal, fastened in welded stainless steel.

The photographs had to represent the not so easy task of capturing the essence and dimension. I think Jim did a bang up job! “ BravO”- Jim!

About the Gardens at Hovey Pond:

Hovey Pond in the Town of Queensbury was the site of the Hovey Ice Company for many years and was also the site of a brick company, which extracted clay from the area around the current park. Hovey Pond Park opened in 1993 and the gardens were begun the same year. The gardens were the vision of Robert Eddy, chairman of the Queensbury beautification committee, who was inspired by the flower gardens at Wisley in Great Britain and realized the need for a public garden in the area. The gardens have grown slowly and evolved from a few flower beds to a group of diverse gardens encompassing approximately 1 & ½ acres. The gardens include a central mixed border, the blue garden, the white garden, the herb garden, a vegetable garden and a native plants garden. The garden is maintained exclusively by volunteers who work each Wednesday from April until October. The garden is funded by donations overseen by Friends of Hovey Pond, a not for profit established to ensure the garden’s continued existence. Infrastructure needs such as hardscaping are funded by the Town of Queensbury. Hovey Pond Park is on the most heavily utilized parks in the Town of Queensbury and each year thousands of people visit the park and gardens. Over the last few years the gardens have undergone extensive renovations to change traffic flows, add more plant diversity and create visual interest throughout the seasons.

How - What - Why of Art and pricing.

miChelle M. Vara- 518-587-8706
6 Ballard Road Art Studio Wilton NY 12831
http://www.michellevara.com/

*Sculpture *Metal fabrication *Paint *Airbrush *Lettering *Vinyl and more.

How - What - Why of Art and pricing.

In this outline I the artist hope to offer you the reader, insight into the ever increased questions. I hope to build a community of meaningful connective relationships.

Art is powerful for both the artist who has dedicated their lives to it, and for the collectors whom are moved by it emotionally or visually. Art expresses, conveys or demonstrates deeply held feelings, ideas, insights, history, spiritual events, memories and beliefs as well as moral, ethical, and political sentiments, in socially expectable ways. Art opens forums for controversy, comfort and conversation. Art transforms areas of life (ie: corporate, work, home, medical, parks, state, towns) offering humans to be uplifted and stimulated in interactive spaces. Public art programs have statistically stimulated financial and social change. Taking a troubled, blighted or impoverished neighborhood and revitalizing it to one of pride and stability.

Bottom line - There is no right or wrong in the experiencing of art, just a personal perception and quality of execution.

The most common question posed to me as an artist is how do you price the work?

With that one must first realize some of the cost to produce, thoughts and ideas in dimension.

Labor- Pick up, collection, sorting, find, storage, dis-assemble, re-assemble, purchase of parts.

Overhead- Insurance, fuel, power, taxes, maintenance, helper, applications, gallery fees.

Equipment- Computers, office equipment, cameras, programs, fork trucks, cranes, welding machines, tractors, forges, tanks, leads, regulators, trucks, dollies, jigs, hoists, benders, rigging, scaffolding, ladders, generators, hand held power tools (drills, grinders, porta bands, cutters, nibblers, wrenches, gadgets) the cost of maintaining them.

Supplies- Paints (commercial, industrial, automotive, HOC, Lettering, oil, pigment system, spay, high heat, low temp, chemicals for each type), fixatives, primers, inks, vinyl’s, masks, glass, sand, tips, brushes, anti spatter, hardware, tapes, brushes, photography papers, welding wire, gases, nozzles, saws, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, masks, fans, air purifier, filters, leathers, oils, sanding equipment, grinding wheels, cutting (wheels, blades), canvases, wood many, concrete products and tools.

This list is just a sample of what it takes to start the process. Then there’s the Commitment of 24/7, to get a pieces into the finish stages. Actually applying a finish on the piece, framing, bases, pedestals, standing, shipping, travel, install, cleaning, photographing process, applications, web sites, books, research, continued education.

So as the hours, days weeks, months, pass, as an artist I do not charge for all the labor and material. Unlike the person with a regular job, benefits, time off, paid holidays, pensions, retirements and health insurance, yet still doing personal things on company time. Or the persons collecting social services. I am continually learning, honing my practice like a surgeon.

My compensation comes from the expression, execution and finish of the art piece.

Also by the people who have been moved by my art to purchase or commission pieces.

I deeply thank all my supporters, collectors and friends.

I hope new acquaintances are now more educated by this artists perspective.

Sincerely, miChelle M. Vara

Artist awarness project

http://www.saratoga.com/today/2009/10/the-domestic-violence-awareness-project.html

Saratoga Today
The Domestic Violence Awareness Project
Written By: Yael Goldman on October 9, 2009

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, a 31 day campaign to support the individual stories, experiences and personalities affected by domestic abuse.
Every victim of domestic abuse is different and, similarly, this diversity calls for a variety of outlets and mediums to show support and rally prevention awareness. As a visual medium, artistic expression calls unique attention to this cause, which is why local sculptor mi Chelle Vara uses visual art to inspire positive action as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Vara created 8 sculptural pieces, at her Ballard Road Art Studio Gallery in Wilton, to be shown in conjunction with the awareness campaign. From Vara's perspective, communication is vital for those directly and indirectly affected by domestic violence."The problem with domestic violence is the silence barrier. If it's happening, even to someone close, no one wants to talk about it," Vara said. "I create visual pieces that are dimensional; allowing a dialogue to open up through all people."The tragic death of friend Dawn Bovey Roberts, a local victim of extreme domestic violence, enlightened Vara about the need for open communication and support for those in danger. Last year, Vara showed her support with two sculptures, and his year she's added eight more with "bigger language." Through these pieces, Vara aims to capture the positive: how she has seen many people grow through domestic violence, using their experience as something positive to propel them to a new place as an individual. She works with iron and glass to convey how negative energy can be transformed into growth and enlightenment for the world around her.Vara's artwork demonstrates just one medium for expressing the relationship between violence and emotion. She highlights the power and inspiration surrounding those who conquer domestic abuse, and it is their encouraging stories that speak volumes about violence of all forms."Domestic violence and violence are not separate issues. Violence in society must be addressed, and addressed positively," Vara said.By capturing the good that comes from even the most negative situations, Vara's sculptures embody the message that triumph over social violence can be inspiration for change.
